History
Oradell began as a farming community and was incorporated in 1894 as Delford (the name was changed to Oradell in 1920) though its roots trace back to the colonial era. Most most of its existence it was a rural community thriving off farming. Farmers would bring their crops to nearby New York City for sale. With the construction on the railroad it became easier for residents of Oradell to work in the city and get higher pay so the farms started to turn into homes. farms steadily decreased until the last one was sold in 1976. As with many New Jersey towns a population boom started after World War II resulting in new construction of homes, infrastructure and schools. Now Oradell is a beautiful suburb with a taste of its history in older structures like the public library and the many colonial homes that line its streets. The Oradell dam created the Oradell Reservoir which has ended much of the flooding in town while contributing to the water supply for the area. The reservoir is fed by the Hackensack River, Pascack Brook, and Dwars Kill.
